Heartland Cancer Center

Central Kansas Medical Center
Great Bend, Kansas

Surpassed only by heart disease as the leading cause of death in this country, cancer kills one out of every four Americans. Over 1.2 million new cases are diagnosed each year. The two most common methods of noninvasive cancer treatment include Radiation Therapy and Chemotherapy. These therapies can be used either alone or in combination with each other.

The ability of rural populations to receive sophisticated cancer treatment is often limited by assess to facilities typically located in metropolitan areas. Patients and their families are often forced to drive significant distances several times each week to receive care. This effort can sometimes place an enormous burden on their quality of life as well as their family.

The residents of Great Bend, Kansas and the surrounding towns were forced to travel several hours to Newton or Hutchison to receive treatment. Affiliated with Catholic Health Initiatives, the Central Kansas Medical Center Heartland Cancer Center - located in Great Bend Kansas - offers Patients a revolutionary new Radiotherapy Treatment as well as Chemotherapy. SmartBeam IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) is a highly precise technique that targets tumors while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

The freestanding, 11,090 SF facility contains separate Radiation Therapy and Chemotherapy Suites linked by common Reception, Waiting, Administrative, Office, Staff and Support Spaces. The treatment areas are organized around common interior and exterior spaces composed to reinforce evidenced-based design principals : natural light, views of nature, socialization and family interaction.

The Radiation Therapy Suite is comprised of a Linear Accelerator, a CT Simulator and Radiation Imaging along with the associated Support Spaces as well as Examination Rooms and Patient Accommodations. The Chemotherapy Suite - shared by two different Oncology Practices - is centered around the Infusion Area and the Healing Garden. Associated support spaces as well as Examination Rooms and Laboratory are augmented by an Alternative Treatment and Education Program available to Patients and their Families.
