Emergency Department Expansion

University of Colorado Hospital
Denver, Colorado

A majority of Hospitals describe their Emergency Rooms as “at” or “over” capacity. Diversions are becoming a national issue. The surge of Emergency Room Patients is driven by the excessive time to access specialists and the rapidly expanding numbers of uninsured Patients relying on ERs for free care.

The ability to provide for Urgent Care Patients separately from Emergent Care Patients will reduce the pressure on Emergency Departments. Flexibility and adaptation to changes in census minimizes the need to divert patients to adjacent facilities. Over 40% of Inpatient admittance to the Hospital arrives through the Emergency Department. First impressions of care and service are critical.

The University of Colorado Hospital Emergency Department Expansion consolidated the existing Urgent Care and Emergent Care Units into a unified facility of Diagnostic and Treatment spaces. The 16,570 SF, Level II Comprehensive Emergency Care Facility includes 12 Urgent Care Examination Rooms designed for General, Isolation, OB and EENT procedures and 24 Emergent Care Examination Rooms designed for General, Secure, Isolation and OB procedures.

In addition to a dual occupancy Critical Care Resuscitation Room, two Radiology Imaging Suites and a CT Suite, the program includes Reception, Waiting, Triage, Administrative, Security and Decontamination facilities as well as Medical and Environmental Support spaces. These services assure ready access to diagnostic procedures as well as improve Patient safety. The efficient flow of Patients and Staff as well as Materials Management is enhanced through a carefully defined circulation system.
