Peakview Elementary School and Gardner School

Huerfano County School District
Walsenburg, Colorado

Lantz-Boggio Architects, PC prepared building assessments and a district-wide master plan in 2002 which led to a successful bond issue that funded two projects: a two-classroom addition to the existing Gardner School and the new Peakview Elementary School.

The Gardner addition included a new preschool and science lab. It was designed to blend with the existing building and built in the summer following the bond election. Peakview Elementary School is planned to accommodate PK-3 initially with core facilities to accommodate eventual expansion to a 660 student PK-8 facility. When this is completed, the middle school for the District will be closed and enrollment reduced at other elementary schools.

The site for Peakview is located adjacent to the existing high school and is limited in size. The plan includes expansion of the site and sharing some playfields with the high school. The district has been able to accomplish some of the site expansion plans during the construction of Peakview. During the design of this project the entire PK-8 facility was designed conceptually then phase one was implemented which accommodates the head start program, Preschool, kindergarten and grades 1-3.

A central atrium units all the components of this facility and is highlighted by a naturally lighted cupola. Principal spaces in this building include:

·          Competitive sized gym with seating

·          Locker rooms

·          Classrooms

·          Cafeteria and preparation kitchen

·          Media center and computer lab
