Garfield County School District
Rifle, Colorado
Located in Rifle, Colorado, the new $7.8m Highlands Elementary School replaces an existing Garfield County School District facility. The Kindergarten through Fourth Grade facility serves approximately 550 students.
The need for this facility was identified in a District-wide master plan prepared by the Lantz-Boggio Architects, PC with significant participation by the District staff and the community. In 2001 a $39 million bond program was approved by the community which funded this project and several other new and renovated school projects.
Lantz-Boggio Architects, PC prepared the program plan and education specifications for this project through a highly interactive process which involved the staff, community and the design team. The chosen site was limited in size which required the building to be a combination of one and two stories. The two story wing included all the classrooms and was organized by grade. The one-story section included all the support spaces and those areas that were used for off-hours public functions.
Major components of this project include:
Site
· Play grounds for Preschool and kindergarten as well as general playgrounds
· Access to an adjacent public park
· Parking and parent drop-off/pick-up
· Loading dock
Building
· Classrooms arranged by grade level and color code for way finding
· Competitive gym with Music/stage
· Media Center
· Administration
· Cafeteria and kitchen
The building is organized to isolate the classroom wing for security purposes with easy access to the public/support spaces. The main entrance is readily identifiable and scaled to respond to the student at the school. The entry hall is terminated at a focal point midway along the student promenade that is highlighted by a gently curving wall. All the public spaces are celebrated with decorative masonry carpet features and elegant lighting systems. Every teaching space has generous natural light and color accents to support student learning.
